SFURTI stands for Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries. It also means agility in English and hence the motive is to help these industries grow at a faster pace. Because there is no escaping the fact that traditional industries are an integral part of our economy. SFURTI scheme was initially launched in 2005-2006 for improving the productivity and competitiveness of traditional industries and it was revamped on August 14th under the aegis of the Ministry of MSME with an outlay of Rs. 149.44 crore for developing 71 clusters with coverage of 188190 artisans (approx.) in the first phase. Further, the implementation of the scheme is to benefit the traditional industries by making them profitable, productive, and secure. Regarding the scheme, the targeted traditional industries are diversified as Khadi, coir-based, and village industries.

The scheme is coordinated by Scheme Steering Committee (SSC) under the MSME chair of secretary and has various nodal agencies like Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Coir Board, and Technical agencies.

Objectives & Benefits of SFURTI

The scheme aims at organizing the traditional industries and artisans into clusters so that they can be provided with adequate support which will eventually help them in achieving sustainability for a longer period. And for being sustainable they are taught to be more competitive. Technical and Development programs are organized for the professional grooming of the artisans. The training is not just for the production phase, rather clusters are getting trained for enhancing the marketability of products by providing support for new products, design intervention, and improved packaging.

The scheme also focuses on promoting E-commerce for marketing so that sustained investment in the sector guarantees the growth of the economy. Also, it aims at shifting the agenda of production from supply-driven to market-driven. So that the needs of the customers and market are fulfilled. At the same time, the whole process is governed by the active participation of the stakeholders, so that if any obstacle or loophole occurs, it can be handled systematically. The scheme even provides the services of reputed national/ regional institutions that have expertise in artisanal and small enterprise cluster developments as Technical Agencies to provide handholding and implementation support to the SFURTI clusters.
